Amazon has announced plans to invest at least US$20 billion in Pennsylvania to expand its data centre infrastructure in support of AI and cloud computing technologies.
Salem Township and Falls Township have been identified as the initial locations for these planned innovation campuses, with several other communities across Pennsylvania also being considered.
The investment is expected to create at least 1,250 new technical roles, including data centre engineers, network specialists, engineering operations managers, and security specialists.
It will also support thousands of jobs connected to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre supply chain, including roles in construction and other local industries.
This announcement in Pennsylvania builds on recent commitments made by Amazon across the US, reinforcing its focus on generative AI and high-technology cloud infrastructure.
According to the company, these developments are intended to support US leadership in AI and help organisations across various sectors use AI-driven solutions to improve operations and drive innovation.
AWS is used by a wide range of clients, from startups to large enterprises and government agencies, as they pursue AI-related goals, manage costs, and improve operational efficiency.
The investment will also contribute to Amazon’s broader development of advanced computing infrastructure and specialised AI hardware.
The company views these developments as a foundation for the next generation of generative and agentic AI, aimed at maintaining the United States’ position in global technological advancement.

“Amazon’s multibillion dollar investment in Pennsylvania reinforces our dedication to advancing AI innovation while creating lasting economic opportunities in the state,”
said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer.
“By expanding our cloud computing infrastructure, we are investing in Pennsylvania’s future through new jobs, workforce development programmes, and community initiatives. We look forward to helping drive the next generation of technology innovation, while delivering meaningful benefits for Pennsylvania residents.”
